No answer is a short documentary about “special children,” filmed at the Special Education School in Hezhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The filming and editing process took two months.

Inspired by the book The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida, I wanted to create a documentary about autistic children. After coordinating with the producer and obtaining approval from the school, we spent two weeks observing classes, understanding students’ schedules, selecting subjects to film, and drafting the project before starting the shooting process.

At this school, there is a group of children who cannot live like “ordinary people.” Some dwell in their own world, while others long to communicate but are unable to speak. In general, they are neither understood by society nor heard by the world. But even so, is their life truly as tragic as we imagine? Are they children abandoned by their parents? Are they children who give up dancing simply because they cannot hear?

Through this documentary, I hope you will hear their answers.
